Eyesores, blots & blemishes

A poorly maintained wall

There is a problem developing in Dronfield due to erosion of stonework near to ground level.  A particularly severe example of this is the wall to St John the Baptist Church in Church Street.  Two photographs showing the severity of the problem can be seen in the adjacent panels.  Unfortunately this long and high wall is also in a poor state of repair for other reasons:  it is in need of extensive re-pointing and there are a number of bulges along its length.

Unless restorative action is taken quickly there is little doubt that eventually the wall will have to be totally rebuilt at high cost.  We understand that North East Derbyshire District Council are responsible for the maintenance of this wall.

Responsible owners do take action to repair stonework affected in this way.  An excellent example of where this has been done is at the homeopathic clinic in High Street.  This can also be seen in a photograph opposite.  The owner of the building, Jane Cosgrove, is to be congratulated on this restoration which has played no small part in helping to preserve our conservation area.

We have long been concerned about eyesores in Dronfield, particularly ones that exist for no apparent reason or because the owner or responsible authority is insufficiently motivated to take corrective action.

Unfortunately all too regularly eyesores remain as a blot on the urban landscape, usually degenerating further with time.

Because of this, we have decided to focus on some areas of Dronfield in the hope that this publicity will help to encourage people to take appropriate action.

Good stonework restoration on the High Street

Badly eroded and poor maintenance of the Parish Church wall. The wall is in extensive need of repointing.
