Litter Clearance
A town without litter is what we’d all like to see. Over the years Civic Society members and volunteers from other groups have organised litter picks at problem sites such as Mill Lane, Callywhite Lane and the big lay-by. One of our biggest and most successful litter picks was tackling the big lay-by. Gaining permission from the farmer to enter the field below it meant we could bag litter that had been there for years. Working with the Don Catchment Rivers Trust we tackled not only litter on Mill Lane but also a hugely successful clean-up of a section of the River Drone.
Encouraging younger citizens to care for the town is an important part of our work. Over the years we have worked with the Hilltop Cubs as they work to achieve their Community Impact Badge. We have been approached to help organise another litter pick with the Cubs around Easter time. The Local Authority has supported these initiatives over the years by supplying plastic bags, gloves and litter picking tools as well as collecting the bags of litter we have picked.
